Two world leading wine critics join forces

Antonio Galloni’s Vinous has just announced its acquisition of Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar (IWC) forging a significant partnership between these leading wine critics. IWC’s entire archive will be added to Vinous, which will now feature over 180,000 wine reviews and more than 1000 articles. In addition to bringing over his whole team (Josh Raynolds, Ian D’Agata and Joel Payne) Tanzer will join Galloni as partner, editor-in-chief, and lead critic.

Although he launched Vinous only 18 months ago, Antonio Galloni is a well-respected wine reviewer having formerly been Robert Parker’s lead critic at The Wine Advocate before starting his solo career early in 2013. In contrast, IWC is the oldest, independent American owned wine journal having been established in 1985, so Stephen Tanzer brings a great number of loyal readers as well as his wealth of experience.

Galloni and Tanzer have been good friends for a long time and clearly admire each other’s work. Galloni said of the collaboration ‘I have known Steve Tanzer and have been a subscriber to IWC for over a decade… When it came time to choose a partner with complementary strengths and shared values, Steve was the obvious choice.’ From the outside looking in this looks to be a great move by Antonio Galloni and certainly beneficial to both parties. Tanzer adds ‘I am looking forward to partnering with Antonio to bring our combined subscribers the most comprehensive, informative, independent wine web site on the market.

While Robert Parker and The Wine Advocate remain undisputed champion, it seems that Vinous could start creating a bigger impact in the global wine market. It will be particularly interesting to see if The Wine Advocate can hold onto top spot when Parker finally puts his notepad down, or will Vinous take the reins with young Galloni at the helm.
