Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, owner of Chateau Mouton Rothschild died on August 22nd 2014. By the time of the Baronesses’ birth in 1933 Chateau Mouton Rothschild was established as a powerhouse, the Baronesses father, Baron Philippe Rothschild’s innovations such as chateau bottling and a new state of the art Chai were truly revolutionary and his work culminated in the achievement of promotion of Mouton Rothschild to First Growth status in 1973.
Philippine Rothschild was born to the Baron and Elizabeth Pelletier de Chambure, Elizabeth was married to another man at the time of the birth, however, her parents were married in 1934. The marriage was to be short lived, the couple separated in 1939 and devastatingly, the young Philippine de Rothschild witnessed her mother’s arrest by the Gestapo in 1943. She was never to see her again and Elizabeth was killed in 1945 at Ravensbruck concentration camp.
Philippine de Rothschild perused an early career in acting, graduating from Paris’ Conservatoire National d’Art Dramatique in 1958, she went on to appear in many plays, however, her future lay working alongside her father at the family’s Medoc estates. The Baroness increased her involvement in Chateau Mouton Rothschild from 1981 and eventually assumed control of the Chateau along with Chateau d’Armailhac and Chateau Clerc Milon on the death of her father in 1988. The Baronesses’ years at the helm of the estates brought with them successful changes such as the launch of a second wine, Le Petit Mouton in 1994, extensive renovations of the family’s properties and the growth of additional brands such as Mouton Cadet and Barons de Rothschild Champagne. Philippe Dhalluin was appointed as the General Manager of Mouton Rothschild in 2004 and under his guidance the property produced a string of consistently outstanding wines.
The Baroness Philippine de Rothschild was married twice, secondly to the noted academic, Jean-Pierre de Beaumarchais and is succeeded by her three children all of whom are involved in Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA and own part of Mouton Rothschild.
