A series of unfortunate weather events have left areas around Bordeaux devastated and The Comité Interprofessionnal des Vin de Bordeaux have projected a decrease in production of 20% on the already very low harvest last year.

The white grape regions of Graves and Pessac Léognan were particularly badly hit by hail storms in August causing a 200,000-300,000 hectolitre decrease in the harvest and the resulting coulure (a metabolic reaction to weather causing a failure of the grape’s development after flowering) may destroy up to 800,000 hectolitres.

Bordeaux was not the only area affected by adverse weather, the President of the wine section of FranceAgriMer predicts a nationwide production of 43.5 million hectolitres against a 10 year average of 45.4m.
