One of the greatest pleasures in collecting or investing is finding a wine that is undervalued by the market and Chateau Clinet 2010 is hugely under-priced. Clinet was one of the 19 perfect 100 point scores awarded by Robert Parker in the 2009 vintage and trades today at £2,450 (12x75cl). In 2010 he awarded a mere ten perfect scores and in turn gave Clinet 96+ points, which is priced today at £1,090 (12x75cl). This 45% difference represents a huge discrepancy in terms of price versus quality and other critics – in particular James Suckling and the Wine Spectator – consider the 2010 better than the 2009. These twin vintages are divisive amongst critics, with many believing 2010 on a whole is better than the 2009, perhaps it is worth considering their views?

The 2009 and 2010 are the greatest twin vintages ever made and the 29 perfect scores bestowed by Parker cannot be underestimated, he has only scored 58 official perfect scores in Bordeaux since he began tasting over 30 years ago. They are very different vintages and the difference in the Clinet’s score is a reflection of Parker’s slight 2009 bias. It is likely he will mark the 2010 up in the future and it remains one of the wines of the vintage. It has a lot of headroom at this price, given that the 97 scoring 1990 Clinet is £2,450 and the 100 point 1989 is £6,000 a case. Against its similar scoring Pomerol peers in 2010 it is also under-priced. This has to be considered as one of the top 25 Pomerols made in the last 20 years and for £90 a bottle that is a very hard thing to come by, extraordinary relative value.

The blend is largely dominated by 85% Merlot, with some Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Cabernet Franc also included. Inky/purple-colored, the wine has an exceptionally full-bodied, layered, moderately tannic mouthfeel and impressive power. Loads of melted chocolate/fudge and black fruits galore along with some coffee bean, mocha, as well as some background oak are all present in this big, formidably endowed, masculine style of Pomerol that will take longer to shed its tannin than the 2009. I would give this wine 5-6 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 30+ years.

The 2010 is another fabulous effort from this estate of just over 20 acres located in the sector named the same as the chateau, Clinet. Modest yields of 38 hectoliters per hectare produced a final blend that hit 14.4% natural alcohol. Robert Parker

Chateau Clinet
Clinet is now simply one of the best estates in Bordeaux. It is a small property with only 11.27 hectares located on the highest point of the Pomerol plateau, close to L’Eglise Clinet and Trotanoy. The property’s 45 year old vines rest in soils that are a wonderful balance of gravel, clay and rich sand, planted with 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Clinet was bought by Jean-Loius Laborde in 1998 and employ the mighty consultant Michael Rolland, who increased the amount of time spent ageing in new French oak, vintages now see 18-22 months in 60% new oak. Clinet also introduced leading modern technology such as moving grape juice by gravity flow into nine different vats were the wine is fermented with wonderful precision ensuring each plot is vinified to its optimum potential. In recent years the Estate has been producing wines that rival Petrus, making wines of the vintage in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Clinet only produces 3,200 cases a year and the wine is incredibly rich, exquisitely balanced, with a powerful but delicate texture and a finish that goes on for minutes at a time.
