Chateau de Fieuzal Blanc 2013

Following on from the ‘sell-out’ Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc 2013 last week we are delighted to offer Parker’s dry wine of the vintage. At the start of the month Robert Parker released his scores for the vintage and the resounding winner was Fieuzal Blanc. As is often the case in Bordeaux a difficult vintage for the red wines results in a good/great vintage for whites and sweet wines: this paradigm is particularly true of 2013, specifically Fieuzal Blanc. Parker states: ‘The 2013 white wines are very perfumed with abundant fruit as well as high acids. They are far superior to the red wines.’

Since Parker released this score we have been looking for a parcel of Fieuzal Blanc 2013, which has completely sold out in Europe. His 94-96 point score makes this wine incredibly appealing; it always pays to buy the wine of the vintage, especially when it costs £24 a bottle. Incidentally, Ausone was the highest scoring red wine of the vintage with 93-95, the price, £3,250. If we compare this to other leading white wines of the vintage, the price vs. quality is quite extraordinary:

Production of Fieuzal Blanc is perennially small, with less than 3,000 cases produced a year. In 2013 this was greatly reduced in order to make a truly magnificent wine. Less than 2,300 cases were made, it sold quickly in April/May and since Parker’s score the wine has completely disappeared from the market. The red wines of the vintage were written off before they released, however, those in the know are hoovering up the great whites, it was an exceptional vintage for them.

In addition to the Fieuzal Blanc 2013, we are delighted to be able to offer Abeille de Fieuzal 2013, their second white wine. This is made to be consumed younger than Fieuzal Blanc, yet embodies the first wine’s splendour. We have this available for £155 a case of 12, which equates to £17.96 a bottle duty and VAT paid. This will be available in November this year, just in time for Christmas drinking.

Chateau de Fieuzal is an historic property in the Graves region of Pessac-Leognan, dating back to the 1500s. Situated on the famous gravel of Pessac-Leognan and divided by the Eau Blanche stream, the vineyards of Fieuzal benefit from the minerality and stoniness of the well-drained soil. Heat is both retained and then reflected on to the vines, which are planted with equal parts Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc for its Bordeaux Blanc.

In 2001, Lochlann Quinn, the chairman of Allied Irish Banks, purchased Fieuzal and brought in famed chateau owner Hubert de Bouard (of recently elevated Ch. Angelus in St. Emilion) as consultant. In 2012, the estate underwent a multi-million Euro renovation, including the creation of a new cellar and modernizing the winery to allow for parcel-by-parcel vinification.

Equipped with new stainless steel tanks, the vinification of the white wine takes place in 50% steel and 50% new French oak barrels. There is no malolactic fermentation. The wines are aged between 16 to 18 months, depending on the style of the vintage.

Possibly the greatest Fieuzal since the legendary 1985, the 2013 boasts a light straw color with a greenish hue as well as a stunning perfume of tangerine oil, orange marmalade, citrus and honeysuckle. Surprisingly full, rich, exuberant and borderline flamboyant, this is a stunning white Graves to consume over the next 20+ years. Drink 2014-2034.
