Cos d’Estournel 2006

cos

Cos d’Estournel is the greatest wine estate in St.Estephe and the terroir boasts wonderful gravel on top of a limestone plateau, or Cos, which translates as ‘hill of pebbles’.  If it were not for a small stream separating it from Lafite Rothschild it would have been classified as a First Growth in 1855. Following on from our sell out offer of the 100 point 2009 Cos d’Estournel, we ran our Price Over Points (POP) analysis on all physical vintages of Cos d’Estournel from 1959 to 2011. The 2006 vintage, which Parker calls exceptional, has the lowest POP score of all vintages, with a score of 54. The average POP score across these vintages is 145 and taken from 2000 onwards is 75. Prices below are the lowest list price in Europe:

The First Growth, Chateaux Margaux received 94+ points in 2006 and has a POP Score of 186. As such the £63 a bottle, or £78.46 duty and VAT paid Cos d’Estournel offers immense value for money. According to Robert Parker the Cos d’Estournel 2006 entered its drinking window in 2009, where it will remain until 2034. Bordeaux remains the greatest wine region in the world and wines like Cos d’Estournel 2006 offer immense quality vs. price. It traded as high as £1,050 in 2011 and released at £720 En Primeur in June 2008: it looks like a good time to buy!

Cos d’Estournel was named eponymously after Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel who inherited the Estate in 1810. He found particular success in India where his wine sold at prices far above his rivals and he became known as “the Maharaja of Saint Estèphe”. To celebrate this success he built the pagoda style property which today is still one of the most recognisable sites in Bordeaux from which their second wine Pagodes derives its name. Cos d’Estournel is an impressive wine, intense in youth with a masculine structure and concentrated fruit; it develops slowly but beautifully to release a unique perfume of incense not found in other Bordeaux wines.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate - 94 points
The exceptional 2006 Cos d’Estournel is composed of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, 55% of the production was utilized. Revealing superb intensity for a 2006 as well as an inky/blue/purple color, and a sweet bouquet of blue and black fruits, licorice, graphite, and charcoal, this full-bodied 2006 possesses high levels of sweet tannin. This wine is characterized by a freshness and precision that give it a 1996-like affinity. Enjoy this beautifully concentrated, exceptionally pure, statuesque Cos d’Estournel over the next 20-25 years. By the way, it was bottled without any fining or filtration. Drink 2009 – 2034
