En Primeur Expected Spring 2018
In 2015 Margaux competes and often surpasses the 2009 and 2010 vintages, the wines from this village require serious attention. This morning Chateau Palmer have released their second wine, Alter Ego for £465 per case of 12 bottles. In 2015 is has been awarded 94-95 points from James Suckling eclipsing his 2009 and 2010 scores, calling it the ‘Most serious Alter Ego ever.’ Neal Martin also considers it on par with the 91 point scoring 2009 and 2010, awarding the 2015 90-92 points. The 2015 will no doubt be very popular and will be remembered as one of their best ever. It has also been released at a 22% discount to the current trading price of the 2009 and 33% below the 2005.
Alter Ego contains a little more Merlot than Palmer, in 2015 it is a blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 52% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. I find Alter Ego a true second wine, an elegant replication of the first wine, yet made to be consumed younger. It embodies the incredible fragrance of the Grand Vin, of the 2015 Martin, says ‘It has a very open, ravishing, quite precocious bouquet with ripe black cherries, fresh dates and crème de cassis that gain intensity in the glass.’ Alter Ego improves in bottle for a decade or more and can be enjoyed for 20 years. It should be considered a great Margaux in its own right, always rewarding and iconic.

This morning Fieuzal have released their 2015 rouge, a wine which should be strongly considered to drink over the next twenty years. In 2015 the wines of Pessac Leognan have shone, with their high preponderance of Merlot. This high quality has resulted in Chateau Fieuzal producing one of, if not their finest ever red wines. It has been awarded 92-94 points by Neal Martin of the Wine Advocate, who says it is, ‘extremely pure and sensual, an aromatic femme fatale’, he goes on to say that it is ‘yet another really quite stupendous Pessac-Léognan that is going to be a joy to drink over the next 20-25 years’.
Once again the 2015 offers a 12% discount to the 92+ scoring 2009 and a 28% discount to the 2005, a wine it is destined to match or surpass. While there is always huge demand for the uber brands of Bordeaux, it is at this price point, £21 per bottle that Bordeaux does it best. It is worth stocking up on a few cases, as this is a wine which will reward the small investment. Fieuzal 2015 is a triumph, representative, of excellent terroir, superb winemaking in a very good vintage!
Chateau de Fieuzal is an historic property in the Graves region of Pessac-Leognan, dating back to the 1500s. Situated on the famous gravel of Pessac-Leognan and divided by the Eau Blanche stream, the vineyards of Fieuzal benefit from the minerality and stoniness of the well-drained soil.
In 2001, Lochlann Quinn, the chairman of Allied Irish Banks, purchased Fieuzal and brought in famed chateau owner Hubert de Bouard (of Chateau Angelus in St. Emilion) as consultant. In 2012, the Estate underwent a multi-million Euro renovation, including the creation of a new cellar and modernizing the winery to allow for parcel-by-parcel vinification.

James Suckling, 94-95 Points
Very solid and powerful with dried mushroom and wet earth aromas and flavors. Complex. Full and chewy yet so polished and long. Spicy, meat and gorgeous. Most serious Alter Ego ever. More inner Ego now!. 52% merlot, 41% cabernet sauvignon, and petit verdot 6%.
Neal Martin, 90-92 Points
The 2015 Alter Ego de Palmer is a blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 52% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. It has a very open, ravishing, quite precocious bouquet with ripe black cherries, fresh dates and crème de cassis that gain intensity in the glass. The palate is more refined, reins it all back in thanks to quite tensile tannin, a crisp line of acidity, moderate depth in the mouth and a gentle grip. There is a touch of tarriness and cracked black pepper towards the finish with very good length. Give this 5-7 years in bottle.
James Suckling, 93-94 Points
Lots of blackberry and black currant aromas and flavors. Full body, round tannins, salty and earthy undertones. Very long and flavorful. 48% cabernet sauvignon, 45% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.
Neal Martin, 92-94 Points
The 2015 de Fieuzal has a very seductive bouquet, almost Saint Emilion in style (perhaps the hand of consultant Hubert de Boüard at play?). I mean that in a positive sense: it is extremely pure and sensual, an aromatic femme fatale. The palate is ripe and generous on the entry, but simultaneously poised and minerally, almost edgy towards the sustained and focused finish. There is wonderful freshness and vitality here, yet another really quite stupendous Pessac-Léognan that is going to be a joy to drink over the next 20-25 years. Drink 2021-2045
