Baron de Ladoucette Pouilly-Fume ‘Baron de L’ 2012 & 2014

Baron de Ladoucette, or ’Baron de L’ as it is often referred to, needs no introduction. Baron de L, along with Didier Dagueneau Silex, is the most famous Pouilly-Fume. It is the largest Pouilly-Fume vineyard, which has been in the hands of the Ladoucette families since 1787, it also has one of the most beautiful and recognisable bottles in the world of wine. Comte Lafond purchased the incredible Estate from Louis XV’s illegitimate daughter: the virile Louis XV had many bar sinisters. The Estate is now owned by Baron Patrick de Ladoucette, a descendant of Comte Lafond, who took over in 1972. Since then he has reinforced the 600 years of winemaking excellence, before purchasing the Chateau and winery, the family had been making wine since the 15th century, and solidified its position as one of the world’s leading white wines. It experiences enormous demand globally, with scarce quantities available to the market. As such we are delighted to offer the newest vintage, the superb 2014, for £240 per case of six, along with magnums of the 2012 for £250 per case of 3x150cl.

Château du Nozet, the home of the Ladoucette family, takes pride of place in the region and is one of the most magnificent Chateau in the world of wine. This is reflected by their vineyards, which boast incredible aspect and soil, embodying the finest in the region. The central vineyards, where Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume come from are the farthest inland of the Loire Valley. The climate is more continental, meaning it gets more extreme temperatures, hot summers and cold winters. The soil is chalky and stone, rich in marine fossils and the wines have finesse. Fume means smoke and Baron de L displays a beautiful and smokey taste, reminiscent of gunflint.

The work in their vineyard and winery are exacting. The grapes are destemmed and processed in a gravity flow winery. Different plots are vinified separately, with a gentle four-day press. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel for four weeks at 18 degrees. Thereafter the wine is aged for six months on the lees. Thereon it is blended, and moved to glass lined tanks, where it ages for another nine months. The result of all of this is the world’s benchmark for Sauvignon Blanc, made as it should be, offering beautiful minerality and acidity. The wine has complex notes of beeswax, vanilla and flint. Baron de L combines fleshy flavours with incredible structure, balance and grace. Such is its weight, minerality and purity of fruit, that it can accompany pork, veal and chicken dishes. Baron de L is a world beater and the finest of its kind. We are delighted to offer it today.
