En Primeur Expected Spring 2018

There is little question that 2015 will forever be considered an excellent vintage, in many cases competing with 2009 and 2010. This is particularly true in the southern Medoc and the communes of Margaux and Pessac Leognan, where many wines surpassed their 2005, 2009 and 2010 counterparts. This morning Chateau Cantemerle has released, this is the first property located on the Route des Châteaux, just before one enters Margaux. It comes as no surprise therefore, Cantermerle has produced something stunning in 2015, which has been awarded 95-96 points from James Suckling, a wine he describes as ‘Wow. Real Cantemerle with stupendous power and depth. Mineral, stone and violet character. Full and structure. It starts slowly and then goes on for minutes. Perhaps best ever?’. This makes Cantemerle extremely appealing and possibly the best value for money wine of the vintage.

We consider Cantemerle as one of the best value wines in the world and today’s release price of £17.50 per bottle reflects incredible value for money. This gives Cantemerle 2015 a Price Over Points Ratio of 13.5 one of the lowest we have ever seen, we rarely see any POP ratio below 25! Moreover, the 2015 is priced 16% below the equivalent 2005, 2009 and 2010 vintages and a 40% discount to the 2000 vintage, which trades at £360. We enjoyed a magnum of the 2000 last month and it was stunning, another good reason to buy Cantemerle in larger formats, see bottling options below this offer!

Cantemerle’s history extends to the Middle Ages when it formed part of the fortifications defending the Medoc. Wine has been produced on this site since the 14th Century and in 1579 the Chateau was purchased by the Villeneuve-Durfort family.

Today the Estate is in the stewardship of Le Groupe (Les Mutuelles d’Assurance du Bâtiment et des Travaux Public) who purchased it in 1981 and began investing heavily, rebuilding the cuvier, repairing the chai and embarking on a replanting scheme which results in an average vine age today of 30 years. Today the Estate boasts 87 hectares and is cultivated with 50% Cabernet Saugvignon, 40% Merlot and an additional 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The wine is aged in 40-50% new French oak for 14 months and the Estate produces 25,000 cases a year.

Cantemerle renowned for rich concentrated fruit flavours of blackberry and plum, with delicate brioche and toast, developing a lovely nose of forest floor and liquorice with age.

Neal Martin, 90-92 Points
The 2015 Cantemerle is a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. It offers plenty of blackberry and raspberry fruit on the nose, not the best defined that I encountered among the Haut-Médocs, but with plenty of “stuffing.” The palate is medium-bodied with supple red and black fruit on the entry matched with a fine thread of acidity. There is a pleasing crescendo in the mouth driven by that Merlot content and it finishes with some swagger. This is a very fine Cantemerle exuding joie-de-vivre that I can see doling out plenty of drinking pleasure over the next decade and beyond. Tasted thrice with consistent notes.
