Chateau Fombrauge 2015

Fom1

Chateau Fombrauge 2015 - 94-95 Pts Suckling

12×75 – £170 EP

IG Wines offer a choice of bottling for en primeur orders, prices below.

In 2015 St Emilion and Pomerol stand out, mirroring 2009 and 2010, where serious value for money could be found, outside of the high value power brands. This is particularly true of Chateau Fombrauge, classified as a St Emilion Grand Cru Classes, which can be secured today for £14.17 per bottle en primeur, or £170 per case of 12. It has been awarded 94-95 points from James Suckling, demonstrating the exceptional quality of the right bank in 2015 and this Estate’s rising prowess. The 2009 Fombrauge trades today at £240 a case, while the 2005 has risen to £400. It is an exemplar of what leading Bordeaux estates can do for under £20 a bottle. It can be drunk once bottled and the wine will age and improve for ten years: a triumph and not to be missed at this price point.

Fombrauge is the flagship St Emilion Estate of Bernard Magrez, the owner of Pape Clement. Magrez purchased the Estate in 1999 and has been investing heavily in it ever since. His first action was to hire Michael Rolland as their consultant and the results speak for themselves. Fombrauge is the largest vineyard in St Emilion, which goes a long way to explain how it can successfully release so competitively. It is also one of the oldest estates on the right bank, heralding back to 1679. The vineyard is located at the west of the St Emilion appellation, on a limestone plateau known as the commune of St Christophe. The blend is 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc and it spends 14-16 months in barrel.

In 2015 it offers elegance, balance and poise. It possesses plenty of smoke, leather and white chocolate, combining, fruit concentration with fine tannin and a fresh, elegant mouthfeel. Wines like Chateau Fombrauge 2015 make one double take the price and are a proclamation of an age before prices started increasing exponentially. Bordeaux still makes the best wine in the world for under £20 a bottle.

A rich and layered Fombrauge with so much depth of fruit and fine tannins. Such balance and beauty. Very long and flavorful. Impressive.
