Chateau Gazin are leading the way this morning, with an encouraging 13% euro increase in price on last year. This is lower than expected and will be very appealing to the US, Asian and Swiss markets, where the wine will sell out. Gazin’s 2015 release price is £470 per case of 12 bottles or £39.16 per bottle. Despite the weaker pound losing 8% to the euro since last year, Gazin 2015 offers superb value. Today’s release price of £470 provides a 27% and 30% discount to the current trading price of the 2010 and 2009 vintages respectively. We believe that the current trading prices of the 2009 and 2010 vintages provide a strong benchmark for the 2015 vintage and this discount is appealing indeed. The Wine Advocate are yet to release their scores for the vintage, however, 2015 has the hallmarks of an all-time great Gazin. Tim Atkin MW awarded Gazin 2010 95 points, yet the 2015 96 points, while Jancis Robinson MW has scored the 2015 higher than both the 2009 and 2010.

In 2015, Merlot is the star of the vintage. In Pomerol, Christian Moueix, whose family own Petrus, says that the 2015 vintage, ‘reminds me of the great 1961’ and Olivier Berrouet, the general manager believes it to be one of the best ever. Gazin is a famous Pomerol, whose 26.5 hectares’ border Petrus and L’Evangile, in fact, in 1969 Gazin sold 5.5 hectares to Petrus! Baptiste Guinaudeau, co-owner of Chateau Lafleur has remarked that ‘2015 offered us our best merlots since the 2000 vintage.’ In 2015 Pomerol is exceptional, delivering a similar fresh fruit profile to the 2009s, yet less power than the 2010.
Gazin is cited on the north-east section of the Pomerol Plateau and shares one of the highest levels of elevation with Petrus. As such the terroir embodies the best of Pomerol: gravel with clay, iron and sand, it even boasts patches of blue clay, made famous by Petrus. Gazin is also one of the most esteemed estates in Bordeaux, once the Hospital of Pomeyrols, built by the Chevaliers to receive pilgrims on the Santiago de Compostela. As such the logo draws on its close connection with the Knights Templar.
Chateau Gazin averages 8,000 cases per year, yet only a fraction of that will be released en primeur. It is the Pomerol Estate that offers incredible value for money, especially considering its proximity to the most famous estates. At £39.16 per bottle in a truly remarkable Pomerol vintage, Gazin 2015 is a strong buy. It is offered at a large discount to similar quality vintages, 2005, 2009 and 2010 and is an excellent start to the promising 2015 en primeur campaign.
