2015 En Primeur Expected Spring 2018

Folowing this morning’s release of Carruades de Lafite, the Grand Vin, Lafite Rothschild has opened at £2,195 per case of six bottles.  This represents a 48% increase on the 2014 ex-London release price and a 25% increase on the current 2014 trading price: the 2014 has risen 18.6% since this time last year. In fact, since last year, the last 10 vintages of Lafite Rothschild have risen 8%, suggesting an up-tick in real, consumption fuelled demand. The 2015 is priced at a very good discount to the average current case price, £4,900, of the last 10 vintages and at a very encouraging 37% discount to the average price of 2005, 2009 and 2010, which is £6,050. This will certainly be appealing to investors and collectors who want access to a leading vintage of Lafite Rothschild on release.

In 2015 Lafite Rothschild have made a wine that Antonio Galloni awards 94-97 points,he calls calls it ‘A dramatic, ample Lafite, the 2015 is also arrestingly beautiful and vivid.’ James Suckling remarks, ‘Gorgeous’, and scores it 97-98 points. Neal Martin has awarded it 94-96 points, remarking, ‘It is an excellent Lafite-Rothschild in the making and it often “finds its voice” only after bottling, so it could ultimately end with a higher score.’ We thought Lafite Rothschild had seen a return to form and the 2015 is on par with the 2008.

Lafite Rothschild
Lafite is the largest of the First Growths both in area and production and occupies the northern tip of Pauillac close to the border with St Estephe in the Medoc. Evidence of the existence of wine-making on the site of Lafite dates from the 14th century and records of the wine itself date from 1641. In 1868 Lafite was purchased by Baron James de Rothschild, a member of the famous banking family and has been presided over by Eric de Rothschild since 1974.

Within the Pauillac appellation, Lafite is often considered the most elegant, feminine wine when compared to the masculine Latour and the exotic fruitiness of Mouton Rothschild. Since the 1980s, Lafite has produced great vintages on a regular basis and has become the favourite wine of Asia.

James Suckling, 97-98 Points
Here is a Lafite with lots of muscle and tone. Very tannic and velvety textured. Full body, fresh acidity and a bright finish. Shows a tenderness at the end. Gorgeous.

Neal Martin, 94-96 Points
The 2015 Lafite-Rothschild is a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot picked between 17 September and 6 October. Matured in 100% new oak, it has a tightly-wound bouquet with black cherries, cassis, cedar and graphite, though it does not quite possess the depth one would have expected the vintage would have bestowed. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, harmonious on the entry and with the oak neatly integrated. There is a very fine grip towards the finish, which has a tangible spicy edge – white pepper with a touch of bay leaf and enough pencil lead to fill a stationery set. The aftertaste is extremely long here, more than a minute when I timed it on my watch. It is an excellent Lafite-Rothschild in the making and it often “finds its voice” only after bottling, so it could ultimately end with a higher score.
