2015 En Primeur Expected Spring 2018

Pichon Lalande 2015 has released this morning at £995 per case of 12 bottles. It is being heralded as potentially their greatest ever vintage, scoring 95-97 points from Neal Martin, 96-98 points from Antonio Galloni and 96-97 points by James Suckling. It therefore surpasses the 95 point scoring 2009 and 95+ 2010, which trade at £1,150 and £1,100 respectively. The 96 point scoring 2000 trades at £1,800 and as such the future promises much for the exceptional 2015. In fact, only the incredible 100 point scoring 1982 betters their 2015 potential score.  We were hugely impressed with Pichon Lalande in 2015, a view shared by trade and critics alike. Galloni calls it ‘one of the wines of the vintage’, and Martin says Nicolas Glumineau has overseen a quite brilliant Pichon Lalande here’.

Pichon Lalande’s superstar status is secure. It is considered a Super Second with an elegance that sits at odds with the austere richness of its neighbour Latour; it exhibits characteristics more akin to those found in the wines of Lafite. It could be the high percentage of Merlot, that supplies these silky textures to the wine, or that the property’s holdings are located on the border of St Julien with 11 hectares actually inside the appellation. In 2015 the blend is of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. It is a stunner and a must buy wine of the vintage!

In 2015 the second wine of Pichon Lalande, Reserve de la Comtesse has excelled, following the example of the Grand Vin, they have made one of their finest ever. Galloni calls it ‘a gorgeous Comtesse, but the brooding style is going to take some time to come into its own. This is a serious second wine.’ The 2015 Comtesse has real pedigree and ageing potential, Martin says ‘This is a delightful, quite serious deuxième vin that I suspect will age much longer than drinkers will afford it’ its ageing potential tells us everything we need to know about this very fine second wine. For £23 per bottle, this offers serious value for money, it, after all, displays so much of Pichon Lalande’s aristocratic splendour. One would be well advised to take advantage of their second wine this year, it will reward for fifteen years and more.
