‘The 2012 Dominus is flirting with perfection’ - Robert Parker
‘The 2012 is simply breathtaking. A towering, majestic wine.’ – Antonio Galloni
‘Fabulous purity and clarity of fruit. Wonderful Dominus.’  – James Suckling

The leading wines from Napa in 2012 have been hugely popular throughout the year, already considered one of the greatest vintages ever. As one might expect the vintage has seen exceptional acclaim from Robert Parker and international critics alike. Today we are delighted to release the exceptional Dominus 2012, one of the most sought after wines of them all. Robert Parker calls Dominus the ‘California outpost of Pomerol and St.-Emilion’, Christian Moueix was after all largely responsible for Petrus’ global stardom. In Parker’s view ‘The 2012 and 2013 vintages were two of the greatest for Christian Moueix at Dominus in his long and distinguished career… Think of these as more modern day versions of the 1991 and 1994.’ This is magnificent praise considering his accomplishments.

Parker has already marked-up nineteen wines to a perfect 100-point score. Dominus 2012 has been awarded a score of 99 points and given his remarks, Dominus 2012 is a favourite to receive a perfect 100 point score. In addition to Parker’s 99 points, Antonio Galloni has given 98-100 and James Suckling 98; Dominus 2012 is unilaterally loved. Dominus is globally sought after and in 2012 production was tiny, with only 3,500 cases made, 60% lower than the average. Moreover, in comparison with the other leading California wines in this vintage with 98 points or more, Dominus 2012 presents an excellent price point as demonstrated in the table below. Given the extraordinary quality, the relative value, tiny production and the global demand, Dominus 2012 will quickly sell out and remain hugely desirable for the next twenty years.

Dominus Estate represents the synthesis of Bordeaux and Napa Valley winemaking; owned by Christian Moueix of Chateau Petrus. It is located in Yountville, Napa Valley and is famed for producing Napa Valley’s greatest French style Bordeaux blend, Dominus.

Christian the son of the late eminent winemaker and pioneer Jean-Pierre Moueix, whose company J.P Mouiex owns Petrus, La Fleur-Petrus and Trotanoy, first fell in love with Napa wines in the late 1960s when he was attending the University of California at Davis. After completing his studies Christian returned to work with his father. Under Christian’s tenure J.P. Mouiex introduced a number of revolutionary techniques at their estates including, in the early 1970s, crop thinning. However, Napa Valley and its wines lingered in his mind and in 1981 he was introduced on the recommendation of Robert Mondavi to a 124 acre site west of Yountville. This site, named Napanook, had been famed during the 1940s and 1950s for producing some of the best fruit in the Napa Valley.

Under Christian’s tenure Dominus Estate has greatly benefited from the world’s leading winemakers and consultants, including Philippe Melka, previously of Haut Brion and Cheval Blanc. The wines adapt the French technical approach to Californian conditions, focusing on grape growing; dry-farming which relies on a deep root system to take advantage of natural water, resulting in the healthiest possible grapes. They advance a minimalist approach to ensure their wines are elegant, complex and long-lived.

Investors and collectors will benefit from securing the leading 2012 Californian Estates and Dominus is certainly at the very apex of what this stunning region can achieve in magnificent vintages.

Robert Parker, 99 Pts

Flirting with perfection, the 2012 Dominus is composed of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Five thousand cases were produced, a relatively modest amount from this large vineyard’s big crop. Christian Moueix told me that there was plenty of heat in 2012, but there were no excessive hot spells that can plague Napa Valley vintners during the growing season and harvest. This wine’s opaque plum/purple color is accompanied by a beautiful nose of sweet crème de cassis, a touch of background oak (only 40% new oak is used), spice box, cedarwood, black cherries and a hint of spring flowers. The complex, intense aromatics are followed by a deep, opulent, multidimensional, full-bodied wine with not a hard edge to be found. Everything is seamlessly crafted in this beauty and the vintage’s abundant richness is well-displayed. This 2012 can be drunk in its exuberant youthfulness or cellared for another 20-25 years.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 98 Pts
The 2012 Dominus is a real head-turner. Flashy, voluptuous and intense, but with tons of underlying concentration, the 2012 is simply magnificent. A towering, vertical Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2012 Dominus is one of the most concentrated wines of the vintage, yet it also maintains considerable freshness, the signature of a late-ripening vintage with no heat spikes. Sweet red cherry, raspberry and floral notes add lift on the perfumed, expressive finish. The blend is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc.

James Suckling, 98 Pts
Fabulous purity and clarity of fruit. Black currants, blackberries and violets. Full body, big soft tannins and a chocolate, hazelnut and dark fruit character. Some hot stones too. Ripe, velvety and fruity finish. Better in 2020 but delicious to drink now. Wonderful Dominus.
