A History of the Estate
Fattoria dei Barbi was founded in 1790. It is one of the first ever producers of Brunello and is one of the oldest, continuously functioning winemaking estates in Montalcino. The Estate is owned and run by the Colombini family, a hugely influential family in the region who have played an integral part in writing the history of Italian wine over the years. Along with Biondi-Santi, the Colombinis helped build the reputation of Brunello di Montalcino as a wine of great quality and prestige worldwide.
Barbi has vineyards in Montalcino, Scansano and Chianti and covers a total of 756 acres, of which 193 acres are planted vineyards and the remaining land is dedicated to olive groves, woods, farmland and pastures. The Estate produces approximately 67,000 cases combined, of which 17,000 are cases of Brunello di Montalcino. Yields remain low in order to promote quality. Selection is intense and often only 60% of the potential production of Brunello is bottled while the remainder is declassified.
