Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino

fattoria

While our coverage of the 2010 Brunello vintage has been vociferous, today’s release is just too good to miss. We are delighted to offer the hugely acclaimed 2010 Brunello di Montalcino from Fattoria dei Barbi. This stunning Brunello has received glowing reviews from major wine critics around the world. James Suckling has given it the highest score; 96 points and says it is the “Best wine from here for ages”. Monica Larner from The Wine Advocate, calls it “one beautiful Sangiovese” awarding the wine 94 points and last but not least Antonio Galloni who gives it 93+ describes it as “A deep, powerful wine, possesses notable depth and intensity”.

Fattoria dei Barbi’s “Blue Label” Brunello is the heart and flagship wine of the estate’s production and it is made with 100% Sangiovese grapes from only the best vineyards in Montalcino. Since their first vintage in 1958, Fattoria dei Barbi has received top awards at exhibitions all over Europe. In 1962 it was the first Estate to export Brunello to the USA. Today, Fattoria dei Barbi’s Brunello is one of the most widely recognised Brunellos.

With its global recognition, high praise and fantastic value for money of just £120 per case of 6 bottles or £20 per bottle “in bond”, this is an unmissable opportunity to secure another superb Brunello from the excellent 2010 vintage. If we compare this wine with similar scoring Brunellos from the 2010 vintage, it is clear to see the extremely attractive price that this wine can offer.

A History of the Estate

Fattoria dei Barbi was founded in 1790. It is one of the first ever producers of Brunello and is one of the oldest, continuously functioning winemaking estates in Montalcino. The Estate is owned and run by the Colombini family, a hugely influential family in the region who have played an integral part in writing the history of Italian wine over the years. Along with Biondi-Santi, the Colombinis helped build the reputation of Brunello di Montalcino as a wine of great quality and prestige worldwide.

Barbi has vineyards in Montalcino, Scansano and Chianti and covers a total of 756 acres, of which 193 acres are planted vineyards and the remaining land is dedicated to olive groves, woods, farmland and pastures. The Estate produces approximately 67,000 cases combined, of which 17,000 are cases of Brunello di Montalcino. Yields remain low in order to promote quality. Selection is intense and often only 60% of the potential production of Brunello is bottled while the remainder is declassified.
