IG Wines – Staglin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 & 2008 and Staglin Family Estate Chardonnay 2017

staglin(1)

Following our Staglin dinner last night we are thrilled to offer their leading Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Staglin Family Vineyard is one of the most recognisable and certainly finest estates in Napa. Today we are delighted to be able to release possibly their greatest ever wine, the staggeringly good, world famous Estate Cabernet 2013, which has been awarded 97+ by Robert Parker. We can offer the 2013 today at £850 per case of six, a discount of £100 to the lowest listed price in the market.

Last night we had the pleasure to taste several vintages of the Estate Cabernet. Among these was the 2008, which was tasting brilliantly. It is perfectly within its drinking window, where it will stay for another decade. The 2008 is crammed full of rich fruit, cassis and blackcurrant, which combines with vibrant notes with wonderful complexity, offering notes of baked fig, liquorice, chocolate and coffee bean. We have this priced today at £620 per case of six, which offers unmissable value for a wine of this calibre and in the context of other vintages. The Staglin Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is vinified in stainless steel tanks, concrete vats and new French barrels. The new oak varies between 90-100%, for 22-24 months. The wine is famed for brilliant delineation, being both aromatically vigorous, with sensual body and excellent minerality, a wine of finesse and vibrancy.

In addition, we are thrilled to release their stunning Estate Chardonnay, broadly seen as one of the finest white wines from Napa, a wine Antonio Galloni refers to as ‘absolutely gorgeous’. We are very pleased to be able to offer the latest release, the 2017, for £280 per case of six. It has already been awarded 94 points from Antonio Galloni, offering superb value for a leading white wine. It undergoes no malolactic fermentation, retaining freshness and elegance, while seeing 52% new oak, which adds beautiful toast and smoke. It is a knock out white wine, one of the finest available.

The Estate is situated at the base of Mount St. John in a prime location in the Rutherford bench, adjacent to Scarecrow and neighbouring Rubicon Inglenook. The vineyards boast stunning terroir, combining volcanic soils, with gravel, stone and clay. The Estate’s 51 acres of vines are situated at the base of the Western slope which is deep within the Mayacamas Mountain Range benefiting from rich volcanic soils.

The Staglin vineyards date back to 1864 when it was planted. The modern era began in 1985, when Garen and Shari Staglin bought the estate, debuting with the 1986 vintage. With a vision to create truly brilliant wine they quickly brought in David Abreu, who is regarded as the best viticulturist in Napa. Under his guidance they completely replanted the vineyard in 1987. They also brought in the world-famous oenologist Michel Rolland in 1999. In 1990 they began using organic farming techniques, earning their certification in 2005, all of their farming is 100% organic. In 2007 they bought the home of the original owners, the Stecker home, which once formed part of the original vineyard. They then committed to using solar power for all their electrical needs, where a 164-kilowatt photovoltaic array generates the power for their property making it electrically self-sufficient.

It is worth mentioning in closing that the inspiring Staglin Family have also raised 390 million dollars towards the research and medicine for mental health illnesses. Their son Brandon was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1990, which lead to their annual Music Festival for Bran Health, the inaugural event beginning in 1995. Along with their Estate wines they make reds and whites under the name of Salus, the Roman Goddess of health and wellbeing. The family donate 100% of the proceeds from sales towards mental health research. We tasted these wines last night and they are magnificent, we will offer these soon. The Salus project is remarkable!
