La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 890 2005

La.Rioja.Alta.SA.10004638 (3)

This morning we are delighted to release the outstanding and highly anticipated 2005 vintage of La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 890. La Rioja Alta deem their 890 Gran Reserva as their greatest wine making their 890 in exceptional vintages, on average three a decade. Ageing of the Rioja Alta 890 is tireless, painstaking and lasted for a full 13 years with no expense spared. Firstly the wine is fermented in stainless steel vats and then moved to 100% new American oak for a full six years and racked 12 times (the 904 is aged in used American oak for four years and manually racked eight times).

The 2005 vintage in Rioja has now officially been rated as ‘Excellent’. In 2005, Rioja Alta view 890 as exceptional, leading them to award it the status of “Seleccion Especial”. This honour has only ever been bestowed on two other Rioja Alta wines, only once before to the 2001 890 and also to their 2001 Ardanza. As such they believe this is one of the greatest wines they have ever produced, a future legend. James Suckling, Tim Atkin MW and the Penin Guide have all awarded it 98 points, momentous scores for a Rioja. James Suckling posits “One of the greatest ever? The new 1964?”.  The 1964 vintage is recognised as one of if not the greatest ever Rioja vintages. Tim Atkin describes it as having ‘grace and elegance of a great Musigny’.

We are pleased to be able to offer Rioja Alta’s Gran Reserva 890 2005 for £465 per case of six. This already has 13 years of age, released to the market ready to drink. However, this is one of the finest wines of Spain and capable of ageing and improving for 50 years. With 98 points this presents one of the greatest ever wines, from one of Spain’s greatest ever Estates. Due to the exceptional and unique level of this Rioja, we expect it to sell out quickly. Only 4,750 cases of 12 were made for the entire globe, this is miniscule in the world of Rioja and will not satiate the ardent demand.

La Rioja Alta
La Rioja Alta is one of the benchmarks for traditional Rioja. The Estate is celebrated for its Gran Reservas 904 and 890; the 890 is named after the genesis of La Rioja Alta in 1890. The Gran Reservas are only made in exceptional vintages and are considered to be the pinnacle of Rioja today.

The Estate begun in earnest in 1890 founded on the very spot where the head office is located today. Like most great estates, La Rioja Alta remains true to traditional practices, while integrating beneficial modern variances on the winemaking leitmotif. Their two wineries complement each other perfectly: The Haro winery is cited in the Station District, it embodies the full flavour of traditional Rioja winemaking and the facility is perfect for ageing wines. The modern facility in Labastida was built specifically to provide the perfect environment for maximising the fermentation process.
The 360 hectare vineyards are located in the very best parts of Rioja Alta which boast limestone soil, in the subzones of Rodezno, Labastida, Briones, Cenicero and Fuenmayor. In addition they have a 63 hectare estate in Tudelilla in Rioja Baja to maximise the growth of Garnacha. La Rioja Alta harvest 5,000 kg/hectare, 24% less than the maximum permitted across the region, resulting in very high quality fruit.

98 Points, James Suckling
‘The aromas to this are stunning with dried strawberry, stone and fresh mushroom. Full body and very tight with incredible depth and structure. It goes on for minutes. One of the greatest ever? The new 1964? Available January 2018.’

98 Points, Penin Guide
“La Rioja Alta, SA has once again placed its 890 Gran Reserva at the top for the second consecutive year with another great vintage, 2005. Fineness, complex tertiary nuances, acidity and elegance are part of its credentials, a stately, serious wine that is already part of the living history of Rioja wine…”

98 points, Tim Atkin
“Made with grapes from some of the winery’s oldest parcels in Brinas, Labastida and Villaba this really is one of the best 890s ever. Blending Tempranillo with 3% Graciano and 2% Mazuelo, it combines the grace and elegance of a great Musigny with the sweetness, focus and balance of a classic Rioja. Scented, complex and very long. 2017-30”
