Le Pergole Torte 2011 – 97 pts Galloni

mont

Last night Antonio Galloni released his scores for the 2011 Chianti region, which he describes as a ‘warm, precocious vintage which produced a set of ripe – at times exotic – wines, with tons of resonance and volume’. Following on from the seminal 2010 vintage, the 2011 has proven to be outstanding in its own right, with Galloni positing that; ‘The best 2011s will drink well young and also age gracefully.’  The highest score awarded by Antonio Galloni in last night’s 2011 report was awarded to Le Pergole Torte, which he adorned 97 points. At £330 for a case of six bottles, Le Pergole Torte is unquestionably a wine to own, leading the pack in terms of price vs. quality. In addition to Le Pergole Torte, Galloni awarded Tignanello 2011 95 points making it one of their best ever efforts, which we have available for £270 per 6×75. Furthermore, in the last 48 hours James Suckling and Galloni have awarded Solaia 2011 an excellent 96 points, which we released earlier this week for £680 per 6×75, confirming it as a great wine. This overnight score and championing by Galloni makes the 2011 Pergole Torte immediately undervalued compared to its equivalent vintages, as can be derived from its Price Over Points Ratio, see in the table below.

Moreover, while the eminent Tignanello make over 20,000 cases a year, La Pergole Torte made less than 1,300 cases this year. As a result it rises in price quickly in bottle and is far rarer. The 2011 Pergole Torte can firmly be characterised as one of the wines of this excellent vintage and its overnight score has already removed most stock from the UK market. As such we are pleased to be able to offer a very small parcel of ten cases at the original £330 price.

Le Pergole Torte
Montevertine Le Pergole Torte is located in Radda, a district at the very heart of Chianti. Their vineyards are found on the highest altitude in the region, thus benefiting from a cooler temperature which helps the wine retain a wonderful freshness and balance. Taken together Tignanello and Le Pergole Torte represents the best of the Sangiovese grape, which lends itself well to the warmer weather inland.

Unlike Tignanello (85% Sangiovese) Le Pergole Torte is 100% Sangiovese, the wine is vinified in cement tanks, then aged first in French oak and then cask. Production is more akin to Pomerol with only 1,500 cases on average made per year. The purity of fruit is remarkable, it is structured, concentrated and possibly the most refined expression of Sangiovese in the world. It is less rustic and more precise than Tignanello and drinks well young, yet will last for three decades, Le Pergole Torte expresses an intense character and in terms of its powerful structure it is in a league of its own.
