It has been widely reported that Bordeaux 2013 was a difficult vintage for red wines, not so for the dry whites, particularly those form the heralded gravel soils of Pessac Leognan. These wines are ripe, gracious and elegant; combining fragrance and balance with lovely precision, minerality and concentration of fruit. As you may remember from our en primeur release, Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc was a triumph, selling out immediately. Since then James Suckling and Robert Parker have confirmed its excellence, awarding the wine 95-96 and 93-95 respectively, among their best scores of the vintage.
We tasted during en primeurs at Smith Haut Lafitte with the owner Danial Cathiard and the head winemaker Fabien Teitgen and were lucky enough to be introduced to their exciting first ever release of Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc. Like all things at the Chateau, Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc is made with a lot of love, deriving from old Semillon vines (20%) and young Sauvignon Blanc vines (80%) aged 50% in new oak. What is remarkable given the care and investment the wine receives is that they were proposing to release at £14 a bottle; the first question we asked was, ‘when is this available to sell?’.
As such we are delighted to be able to offer the first ever vintage of this wine, which embodies all of the quality and complexity found in the Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, yet at one third of the price. Moreover, what is also exciting is that Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc 2013 is ready to drink now and will develop wonderfully over the coming four to five years. James Suckling agrees with our assessment and awarded the wine 93 points, giving it a POP Score of 22, which is remarkable for a white Bordeaux. Since its release a few hours ago Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc has already sold out, which is not surprising given the high regard it was awarded during en primeurs and that this year’s crop means only 500 cases were made! This is not to be missed.

I love the grapefruit and fennel character in this. Full and lively with wonderful fruit and honey and apple character. This is from young sauvignon blanc and old sémillon vines.
