”It is a magnificent wine” - Antonio Galloni

We are delighted to be able to offer the newest vintage of Cristal, the excellent 2009 vintage at the release price of £550 per case of six bottles, in bond. The 2009 vintage is famed in other regions and in Champagne, conditions were also superb, producing a clean and healthy crop. The best grapes in 2009 came from Montagne de Reims and Ay and the Pinot Noir grape in particular. This is reflected in Cristal which has 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, a clear beneficiary of the vintages splendour. Cristal 2009 is sourced from the finest vineyards in Champagne, the Pinot Noir heralding from Ay and the Chardonnay from Mesnil and Avize.

The 2009 proceeds the release of the 2008, as Louis Roederer feel its plump, voluptuous mouthfeel makes it perfect for drinking now and capable of ageing for decades. Chef de Cave, Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon it describes as a ‘Cristal of sheer delight and crystalline purity’. The only major critic to taste Cristal 2009 to date is Antonio Galloni and only from barrel, but he views it as ‘simply mind-bending’ awarding it 94-96 and stating it is ‘a fascinating Champagne to follow in the coming years and decades.’

Cristal displays superb vintage premium, rising in price after a year and continuing on an upward trend. It comes as no surprise therefore, that older vintages of Cristal are extremely difficult to buy. Cristal only produces 25,000 to 32,000 cases, or 300,000 to 400,000 bottles per vintage. This vintage premium is displayed below, the similar scoring 2002, 1995 and 1990 trade at £1,050, £1,600 and £1,800 respectively per case of six bottles.

The reason Cristal takes a year to start moving up in price is largely due to parallel importing and the fact that Louis Roederer release almost all the vintage at once. However, with the weak pound to euro we can expect Cristal 2009 to be harder to source and to maintain a supply of it in the UK, it will pay to secure a case on release. Cristal 2009 is one for the ages and will find huge global demand immediately.

94-96 Points, Antonio Galloni
The 2009 Cristal literally shimmers on the palate, showing great depth and purity in its sumptuous layers of fruit. It is a magnificent wine endowed with superb length and exceptional overall balance. The 2009 Cristal is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. The percentage of wine aged in oak is 15%, which is down slightly from previous vintages.
