This morning we are delighted to release the most exciting and our favourite Brunello di Montalcino in 2013, Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova. The 2013 vintage is one that Ian d’Agata of Vinous Media says ‘is undoubtedly one of the better years for Brunello in some time – along with 2010, 2001, 2006 and 2004 in that order!’ This is reiterated by James Suckling who pronounces, ‘the top 2013s are reminiscent of outstanding 2006s, which can also possess similarly clear, vivid fruit coupled with depth.’ Suckling’s highest scoring Brunello in 2013 is Tenuta Nuova, which has stolen the show with 98 points, concluding ‘So serious for the vintage. Give it time to show its greatness.’ Indeed, it is the highest scoring Brunello in 2013 from Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate, who has awarded it 97 points. Finally, d’Agata completes the universal praise awarding it 95+ and saying; ‘This knockout wine will age splendidly and will likely merit an even higher score in eight to ten years’ time.’
Priced today on release at £350 per case of six, the value for money here is remarkable: it is the must buy Brunello di Montalcino 2013! Moreover, in 2013 Casanova di Neri are celebrating their 20th anniversary of Tenuta Nuova, which they have commemorated with a special gold-label edition, as displayed above. This makes it even more collectible. The perfect 2010 vintage already trades at £700 a case of six and the lesser scoring 2006 vintage trades at £550 a case of six. We believe Brunello di Montalcino remains some of the best priced truly great wines in the world, the foremost of these is the great Tenuta Nuova, which in 2013 is a must buy!
Casanova de Neri was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri who in 1991 handed the reigns down to his son Giacomo and in forty years has established a remarkable reputation. The vineyards consist of 36 hectares divided into four distinctive areas; Le Cetine cited in Sant’Angelo, in Colle; Il Pietradonice in Castelnuovo dell’Abate and Il Cerretalto and Il Fiesole, which are found close to the Estate’s farmhouse, directly facing the hill of Montalcino.
Tenuta Nuova is the summit of the Neri family’s winemaking prowess, sourced from the Pietradonice and Le Cetine vineyards. The Pietradonice vineyard is sited at 250-300 meters above sea level with a southeast facing exposure. This vineyard is one of the most remarkable in the world, as it is planted on an old onyx quarry, rich in galestro and naturally onyx. Le Cetine vineyard is located 275-320 metres above sea level, with southwest exposure. The soil is rich in galestro, tuffa and clay, surrounded and thus protected by woods. Tenuta Nouva receives the very best grapes from these vineyards, which are rigorously sorted, de-stemmed and passed into the gravity filled fermentation vats. Fermentation is started without using yeast additives and maceration takes place in open conical vats controlled for three to four weeks. The wine is aged in oak barrels for 30 months and then 15 months in bottle.
Tenuta Nuova is not only considered one of the finest wines in Italy, yet also now one of the finest wines in the world, having already been awarded three 100 point scores. Over the last forty years, Casanova De Neri has been at the vanguard of modernisation in Brunello di Montalcino. They have managed to synthesize a perfect harmony between tradition and innovation. The result is a world class wine that remains brilliantly priced on release. In 2013 it represents the summit of winemaking, with 97 and 98 points, it is the must buy wine of the vintage.
