Our coverage of the Brunello di Montalcino 2015 begins in earnest today. Excitement has been building since rumours began that it will match 2010, as a vintage that experienced enormous global demand. Indeed Il Poggione 2015 has a Price Over Points ratio (POP) of 19, one of the lowest we have seen, we consider 30 to be exceptional. Tenuta Il Poggione was established at the end of the 19th century by Lavinio Franceschi and today remains under the same ownership of the fifth generation of its founder, siblings Leopoldo and Livia Franceschi. They are recognised as being one of the very first in Montalcino to bottle Brunello as well as being one of the founding members of the Consorzio. Although the estate covers a substantial area of 530 hectares, only 140 hectares are planted with vines, with another 50 hectares planted with olive trees, and the rest dedicated to grain fields, forest and livestock as part of their commitment to biodiversity. Today father and son winemaking team Fabrizio and Alessandro Bindocci expertly manage these iconic vineyards, located atop the hills of Sant-Angelo in Colle between 150 and 450 metres above sea level and within range of cooling winds of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Their tireless efforts in upholding the reputation of this historic estate begins with a meticulous vineyard management, designed to preserve and enhance the typicity of their terroir. The 100% Sangiovese grapes are painstakingly harvested by hand from some of the oldest vines in all of Montalcino, at which point they are vinified respecting the traditional methods of the region, but not without all of the advantages of a brand new cellar and state of the art technology, allowing for carefully controlled temperatures during fermentation. The wines are then aged for 36 months in French oak casks, chosen in order to highlight the purest expression of the vaunted Sangiovese variety as well as to reflect their own unique terroir.
