This afternoon we are delighted to offer Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer to Kalon and Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer Las Piedras 2015 releases. The 2015 vintage in Napa is broadly expected to surpass the 2014s among the finest Estates, equalling the best of the 2012 and 2013 vintages. Paul Hobbs is spoken by many as the Michel Rolland of California. The peripatetic Hobbs has his own great wine brands spread all over the world; Vina Cobos in Argentina, another in New York State, as well as projects in Chile and Tokaji, Hungary.
Hobb’s greatest winemaking achievement is Paul Hobbs wines in California, leading to him being named the ‘Steve Jobs of wine’ by Forbes and twice personality of the year award by Robert Parker. In 2015, these two stunning vineyards have performed brilliantly. The truly great Beckstoffer To Kalon has been awarded 98 points from Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate and is priced today on release at £1,600 per case of six. This is considered one of the truly prodigious To Kalons and with only 758 cases produced for the entire globe, is in fierce demand. Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer Las Piedras 2015 has surpassed the To Kalon, awarded 98+ points, which is priced brilliantly today on release at £1,050 per case of six. This is the highest score ever from here and with only 353 cases made, it is must buy wine on release.
Paul Hobbs is one of the world’s finest winemakers and the Beckstoffer To Kalon vineyard is one of the truly world-famous terroirs. It is sited in the appellation of Oakville and is considered one of America’s First Growths. The vineyard boasts gravelly, loamy soils with a balmy climate. The material is deposited by ancient streams that flowed down from the Mayacamas mountains, which surrounds and protects the vineyard. It lends itself to velvety wines, with deep, rich flavours and intense, long finishes. When combined with Hobbs’ mastery the wines add incredible balance, harmony and elegance. One very interesting geographical fact is the Beckstoffer To Kalon vineyard is opposite Mondavi Opus One. The To Kalon vineyard was planted by Henry Crabb in the 1860s and today, the pieces of that historic vineyard are in the hands of three owners, Robert Mondavi Winery, Opus One (the joint venture of Robert Mondavi and Mouton Rothschild) and Andy Beckstoffer. It was not until 2000 that wines other than those produced by Mondavi could use the name To Kalon. One can see the significance of Mondavi here and it was where Paul Hobbs started his career in 1977. It is natural thereon that once he left Mondavi he negotiated with Beckstoffer and secured some of the most prized vines, Hobbs knowing every row. This knowledge and winemaking brilliance makes Hobb’s To Kalon among the finest made by anyone and a must for any Napa lover. The 2015 is a brilliant example of what Paul Hobbs can produce in To Kalon, a stunning wine with incredible precision and elegance.
Beckstoffer Las Piedras is located at the foot of Spring Mountain. It was planted in 2001 and is prized for ripe, rich and dense flavours, with intense minerality and lush tannin. The site is flat with slight eastern aspect, with Northwest to Southwest orientation. The soil is of gravelly loam, formed over river-wash deposits. The vineyard dates back 150 years to original Mexican land grants and the incredible gravel in the vineyard lent to the name Las Piedras, meaning little pebbles. This stunning terroir, when combined with Hobbs winemaking genius, has resulted in a brilliant wine. In 2015, with its highest score ever and the superb price of £1,050, the wine is a gem for any cellar.
Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer Dr Crane and To Kalon wines are considered his master work. In 2002, Robert Parker awarded 100 Points to Hobbs’ Beckstoffer To Kalon and in 2013 both his To Kalon and Dr Crane were awarded 100 points. To Kalon 2015 is a continuation of the brilliance, while Las Piedras is a magnificent wine, offering superb value!
