New Release – Podere Poggio Scalette Il Carbonaione 2016, 6×75, £195, 97 Pts

podere

The 2016 vintage in Tuscany is receiving the same level of coverage and demand as 2010, it is a vintage to buy broadly and to stock up on, one that will reward for decades in the bottle. This morning we are pleased to release Il Carbonaione, Poggio Scalette 2016 which has been awarded a magnificent 97 points from James Suckling who describes it as having ‘a crazy nose of pure fruit, featuring pressed violets, lavender, dark plums, cherry compote, orange rind, lemon zest, boysenberries, vanilla, Thai basil and bay leaf… The fruit is so overt and generous yet presented in an unimaginably sleek way.’ Priced at £195 per case of six on release Il Carbonaione, Poggio Scalette offers unmissable value, giving it a Price Over Points ratio (POP) of 23, one of the lowest POP scores we have ever offered. It remains a must by in every great vintage and 2016 has provided the canvas for a magnificent wine. Wines that cost £32.50 per bottle on release with 97 points are few and far between.

Poggio Scalette was founded in 1991 by Vittorio Fiore, who has been a leading consultant and oenologist in Tuscany for almost fifty years. It was built out of a true passion for wine and as a canvas to practice his art. Fiore chose the Estate for its exceptional aspect, which is sited in the Greve hills at the heart of the Chianti Classico region, neighbouring Querciabella. Fiore works with his son Jurij at a height of 500 metres, an altitude ideal for producing wines of finesse, elegance and incredible longevity.

Il Carbonaione is Scalette’s flagship wine, first produced in 1992 – one of the stars of a difficult vintage and evidence of Fiore’s expertise. It is 100% Sangiovese, mostly vinified from vines over 80 years old, possibly the oldest vineyards in Tuscany. These vines are in fact an ancient clone known as Lamole, which is unique to these hills, and grown on world-famous galestro soils, the perfect medium for this varietal, giving the wine a tremendous power of terroir. The wine is fermented in open-topped stainless steel tanks, before spending roughly 17 months in 350-litre oak barrels, half of which are new, split between 90% French and 10% American oak.

Poggio Scalette has also developed a strong reputation over the last two decades for ageing gracefully and evolving a stunning complexity and elegance in bottle, even in off vintages. The wine displays excellent density, combined with ultra-fine tannin and power. It displays blackberries, violet and cherry, with a delighted chocolate flavour profile and sweet herbs, cedar and spice, reminiscent of Right-Bank Bordeaux on the nose. Needless to say, the quality at this price point is outstanding!
