Vega Sicilia ‘Unico’ 2006

VegaSicilia.

This afternoon we are delighted to release the newest vintage of Vega Sicilia Unico, the stellar 2006. Vega Sicilia Unico 2006 is the second only vintage ever to be awarded 100 points, which makes it special. The release price today is £585 per case of three bottles, offering a very attractive entry point to a perfect scoring wine. James Suckling enthusiastically states in his tasting note: ‘The finish goes on for minutes. This reminds me of the gorgeous 1991 or 1964. Drink forever. A wine that you want to spend time with.’  As with the 2005 vintage, Vega Sicilia held the 2006 back longer, releasing the 2007 and 2008 ahead of it. The 2006 is a stunning exemplar of the finest wine in Spain, which Unico competes with the greatest wine of France and Italy for pride of place in the Pantheon of the greatest wines in the world.

As can been seen from the table below, Vega Sicilia Unico displays evident vintage premium, well-worth buying on release. The Estate produces a meagre 6,000 cases of Unico a year, which combined with its strong global demand explains the striking vintage premium. Once the wine exceeds 15 years in bottle it is nearly impossible to buy and prices of leading vintages rise above £300 per bottle. It is worth noting also that Pingus, Ribera del Duero’s other truly great wine, trades above £500 per bottle on release. The 2006 is yet unscored by the Wine Advocate, however, we can expect a superb score. Vega Sicilia Unico is one to buy every year, however, the 100 points makes it very special and we expect it to sell out immediately, then trading at a higher price on the secondary market.

The Unico blend combines Tempranillo with a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, thereby producing a true synthesis between Spain’s leading variety and the best of Bordeaux. The winery was founded in 1864 by Don Lecanda y Chaves, who planted Bordeaux grape varieties, which are still used today and since 1982 the winery has been owned by the Alvarez family. The vineyards express the local terroir in its most sublime form, with many vines more than 100 years old and amazingly their signature wines, Reserva Especial and Unico are harvested at less than one ton per acre.

100 Points, James Suckling
Incredibly floral and beautiful with dark berry, spice, cedar and mint. Chinese plums. Asian spices. Bark. Tea. Full body, dense and so soft and complex. The finish goes on for minutes. Endless and fine. January 2018 release. This reminds me of the gorgeous 1991 or 1964. Drink forever. A wine that you want to spend time with.
