Vieux Chateau Certan 2015, 12×75, £2,700, 100 Pts

Vieux Chateau Certan (VCC) is the world beating Pomerol wine that many believe is comparable in quality to Chateau Petrus, which it neighbours. VCC is one of the oldest Bordeaux estates in Pomerol, dating back to the 1700s, whence it history began with Jean Demay de Certan. Through its formative years it was considered the finest of the Pomerol appellation. It is easy to understand why, the peak of its vineyards are sited at the epicentre of the Pomerol plateau. It boasts one the largest single blocks on the Pomerol Plateau and is surrounded by Chateau Lafleur, which is next door, with Petrus and L’Evangile as neighbours, it also has vines planted next to Le Pin. In fact, its vines found at the centre of the top of the Pomerol Plateau share this position with Petrus, on the blue clay dominant soils.

On Friday afternoon, Lisa Perrotti-Brown awarded VCC 98+ points, describing it as having “profound notes of blueberry compote, dried mulberries, black forest cake, licorice, violets and garrigue with wafts of black truffles, sandalwood and rose hips’, that really conjures how good it is. This bottle score follows a 98-100 score from barrel given by Neal Martin, who then went on to give it 99 points in his unofficial Wine Advocate bottle release, saying ‘This is one of the wines of the vintage’. Antonio Galloni recently awarded it a rare 100 points, calling it ‘pure class’ and James Suckling also gave it a perfect 100-point score. Simpy put it is one of the greatest, if not the greatest Vieux Chateau Certan ever made and Martin agrees saying it is ‘destined to be one among the canon of legendary wines from the estate although it does deserve requisite cellaring.’  VCC is one of the most decorated wines in 2015, a stand out masterpiece which we are delighted to offer today at £1,350 per case of six, or £2,700 per case of 12.

VCC is highly allocated on release and hard to source with proper age. Its stock in growing every year as is its price tag, the average price across the last 15 vintages increasing 50% over the last four years. Moreover, it has been spoken about as one of the wines of the vintage since 2009, something it carries in 2017, which is a towering example of the terroir and wine-making. However, the 2015 stands out and will be the vintage at the crest of this Estates’ growth. Only 4,500 cases were made in 2015; it is certainly a future legend and the pinnacle of VCC.

In the last few decades under the direction of Alexandre Thienpont, whose first vintage was the 1986 vintage, its famous pink capsule has one again taken centre stage, viewed as one of the finest wines in the world, it surely is. It is a romantic notion that the pink capsule came about due to Georges Thienpont, who bought the Estate in 1924. He wanted to know which of his clients were buying VCC and thus the pink label, which happened to be the en vouge colour in Paris at the time, stood out in cellars, letting him spot his wine. The family are also well known from Chateau Le Pin, which Jacques Thienpont purchased in 1979. Today VCC consists of 14 hectares, planted with 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine undergoes 18-22 months in new French oak. The second wine is called Gravette de Certan.

VCC 2015 is a future legend that will provide staggering quality from bottle over the next 50 years. A wine that will only benefit from VCC’s ever rising cachet and restricted production
